In a recent conversation, the concept of “believing mirrors” came up. It is a term coined by Julia Cameron, author of The Artist’s Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity. Cameron talks about the importance of artists having people in our lives who believe in us and in our creative work. These are the people who can reflect back to us what we are capable of even when we may not be able to see it ourselves.
I appreciate Cameron’s insight, because I know what a huge difference it makes when I hear back from someone that they have been touched or helped by something I have put out into the world. But when the subject of believing mirrors came up again recently, I realized that in my core I feel like I am a believing mirror for humanity. In my heart of hearts I know we have it in us to get through this awakening process, turbulent though it is.
Not only do I believe that we can do it; I see that we are doing it. More and more of us are letting our hearts be broken open by the suffering in the world. We are learning to meet the shadow—personal as well as collective—with compassion. We are facing our generational trauma and healing it in Love. We are choosing to opt out of the enemy narrative and standing instead in the truth of our oneness.
Of course, there are times when we wonder if we’re going to make it. And since we humans, in our unconsciousness, have created most of the crises we are facing, there may be times when we wonder if we even deserve to survive as a species.
As I write that question I can feel the Love in me shouting an adamant “Yes!!”
Believing in Each Other
The other morning when I was up on our roof deck doing my morning journaling, I noticed a flock of geese flying overhead in formation. The sight reminded me of how geese are able to make their long migrations. They fly in a V formation because it helps them aerodynamically. Each bird creates an updraft for those that follow, making their flight less physically demanding.
But it is very taxing to be in the lead position, which is why they take turns doing it and why the geese who are farther back are constantly honking their encouragement to the leader. I suppose you could say they make their way home by being believing mirrors for one another.
It may seem like we humans don’t really know what we are doing, or where we are going, and on the surface that may be true. But it is also true that something deeper in us knows exactly what it is doing and knows precisely the way home. It may seem like we are winging it, and that’s because we are. We are winging it back home, back to the truth of who we are.

Beautiful message. So empowering and inspiring and encouraging. You are definitely a believing mirror and the reflection you provide provokes us to see our true selves and see our oneness with others and all.
