We find ourselves in a planetary moment of unprecedented change and uncertainty. This is evoking fear, which is being expressed in violence and the desire for authoritarianism, as exemplified in the January 2021 insurrection in the United States.
In this podcast episode we look at the similarities between this evolutionary moment and the process of birth, and we consider how we can cooperate with this natural process rather than turning away from it in fear.

Awakening to Love in a Time of Fear: Five Essential Practices.

Welcome beautiful souls to this week’s podcast episode.
I wanted to reflect today on the fact that we have begun a new year 2022—happy New Year to all of you—and I wanted to share some things that are sort of mulling around in me as we begin this new year, and also reflecting on the fact that this week, here in the US, we are marking the first anniversary of the insurrection that happened in 2021, the attack on the Capitol. I want to reflect on how I’m seeing that and how it relates to where we are right now in this awakening process.
As I’ve spoken of many times before, and many people have been saying the same thing, we are in the midst of a monumental shift of consciousness here on the planet. And I just want to emphasize how huge this is because you and I are going about our daily lives, and doing what we need to do, and we are also on the planet at such an epic moment where this shift of consciousness is happening. We are moving out of the egoic, separateness consciousness and into the consciousness of union, the consciousness of really our divine essence, and the understanding and recognition of the interconnectedness of everything that is. And it is a turbulent ride.
And part of that is because there’s so much fear. There’s so much fear about what’s happening. And we see this fear emerging, because really the world that we have known is dying away, it’s passing away, and of course, that evokes a lot of fear. But I wanted to share with you a metaphor that’s been lingering in my mind. I’ve just been holding this as a metaphor for what we’re dealing with right now.
And the metaphor is that of birth, and specifically, how birth can happen in a couple of ways. Well, nowadays, there are three ways a baby can be born. One now is cesarean. But back in the day, there was either a regular, we’ll call it a regular birth with the head down, the baby’s head is down, or the breech birth, where the head is turned away from the birth canal. With a breech birth, the butt comes out first or the feet. And a breech birth, of course, is much more problematic. It has more complications.
And I see right now, these two energies being present, the energy of the breech birth and the energy of the birth of the baby with a head dropped towards the birth canal. Metaphorically, I see the breech position as that position of fear, when the head or the mind turns away from what is happening out of fear and tries to hold on to what it has known in the past.
If we think about birth, it is, of course, a process where we enter into a world that we have never known. And I myself am not a mother, I’ve never given birth. But all of us have experienced birth, whether or not we remember it. We’ve been through this process before. And so this breech position, where the head or the mind is turned away out of fear, is what I see as the resistance that we see in the world that is arising in the expression of fear and the desire for authoritarianism, which is really trying to hold on to a world that we’ve known, looking to some sort of strong man to keep in place the world that we’ve known.
Now, of course, once birth, once the birthing process is underway, as it is on this planet, there’s no going back. So all of this effort to try to resist what’s happening of course, in the end is futile. It’s simply a matter of whether this birth will be as effortless as possible, or as effortful and frightening and painful as we can make it.
So the breech birth is when the head turns away from the birth canal, wanting to resist this transformation that is underway. I, of course, I’m speaking metaphorically here, but I think it applies.
Conversely, when the baby drops its head, when the baby positions itself with its head—and of course, that’s the crown chakra—with its head dropped down, facing towards the birth canal, facing towards this thing that’s happening, facing towards the world that it does not know yet, that it has never experienced, that is what allows the birth to happen more easefully.
And I’ve been thinking about one of the cards in the Tarot deck which is known as the Hanged One. And this card is like an archetypal symbol, it’s an image of someone hanging upside down. And what it is, it’s the archetypal symbol of this stance of surrender, of giving oneself over. One could say also a surrender of trust.
And that position of the Hanged One, with the head facing down, this position of surrender, is the position that the baby ideally takes before birth, began before the labor pains begin.
We understand of course that birth is a totally natural process, it’s not something that the baby has to make happen. It is something that is happening through this Life force that the baby is part of. But this is not something that is on the child to bring forth. It is cooperating and participating in a process that is so much bigger than itself.
And I think that because we for so long have been operating out of the thinking mind and out of the belief that it’s on us to make things happen and to solve things, and work things out, and understand things, we have come at this awakening process with that same attitude. That we have to make something happen here, or we have to understand what’s underway.
And none of that is the case. None of that is the case. All that’s been asked of us in this moment, is for us to surrender to the process that’s underway, and to trust that we are in very good hands, that there are an infinite number of divine midwives who are present to help us through this birthing process.
And because everything is interconnected, and because consciousness is of a whole, every time any of us assumes that stance of allowing our heads to drop in an attitude of surrender and allowing and an attitude of trust, the more any of us can assume that posture in ourselves, the more we are helping this baby turn towards its birth, towards its awakening, towards this emergence of a new world and a new, a new humanity really.
And I offer this this week, in particular when we observe and we remember here in the US that display that we witnessed a year ago that display of resistance, and fear. All of these acts of violence are simply an expression and a manifestation of the mind that is in a state of fearfulness.
I would heartily like to recommend a book. I’ve mentioned this many times, but I want to recommend it once again in case you haven’t had a chance yet to read it. The book is called What in the World Is Going On? Wisdom Teachings for our Time. This is a book that was channeled by Penny Gill and originated from a divine being, a consciousness, whom the Tibetans know as Manjushri, or divine wisdom. This book really lays out what is happening globally in this moment, this planetary moment, and Manjushri looks at what’s transpiring on the planet from a much wider perspective and allows to us to sort of lift ourselves above the the tumult that’s playing out on the surface of the planet and allow us to see the evolutionary process that we are in the midst of. Again, the title, What in the World Is Going On? Wisdom Teachings for our Time. I highly recommend it as a wonderful resource to help us keep reorienting ourselves towards what’s really going on here.
In that book, Manjushri talks about the the new energies, the very high frequency energies that are bathing the planet, and how challenging it can be for some people to adapt to these energies, that they are not equipped yet to be able to receive them, and hold them and, and allow them, and flow with them. And the response then, is one of fear and resistance.
We see that happening right now, we see that fear and that resistance, that even though people may not know why they’re in such deep fear and resistance, and they might pin it on certain things that are happening in the external world that they can see, there is this other dimension of this evolutionary moment that we’re in and the incredible changes that we are in the midst of that are evoking fear at a very deep level.
Because truly the world that we have known is passing away. Just as the baby in the womb, its world passes away, the water breaks, the contractions begin, it is forced into this birth canal that is just excruciatingly tight, and well, that’s kind of where we are, right? We are experiencing these contractions, the collapse and the flowing away of the world that we’ve known. And, and it can be terrifying.
So if we can hold that fear in compassion, hold it and understand that there’s so much that is so normal about this fear. How could we not be afraid? The world that we’ve known is ending and we’re going through these contractions, these birthing pains, and we’re being forced into this birthing canal that feels so narrow and constricted, and we don’t know what’s ahead.
And that’s the thing. Because we’re entering into a world that we have never experienced. Just as the baby in the womb cannot fathom the world that it is being born into, cannot fathom what light is like or what air feels like. It can’t fathom the world that it’s entering.
And that’s the same with us. We cannot fathom the world that we are entering. We cannot fathom who we are becoming. And so we simply open ourselves in trust, knowing that this is a divine process that is underway. That it’s not on us to carry it out, or even to understand it, but to simply surrender ourselves in trust, allowing this process to have us and to take us where it wants to take us.
So I leave that with you this week to ponder, and to encourage you in your own life to allow your head to drop in that metaphorical symbol of surrender. Allow yourself to orient yourself towards what wants to happen, even though you can’t understand it, or see it or begin to imagine it. And until next time, I bid you peace
