I know winter can be a difficult season for many people, but there is something about its spareness that speaks to me. I love seeing the bare trees silhouetted against the winter sky, and I feel winter’s invitation to go into the quiet, into the interior spaces to allow the Unknown to gestate in the season’s darkness.
Here’s a song I wrote and recorded many years ago about this introspective time of year.
Winter
I stand alone in the darkness of night,
In the deep silence that won’t let me go.
The mighty moon draws me into her light
And leaves my shadow on shimmering snow.
The winter trees reaching up to the sky,
Bare branches laden with wisdom untold.
Their hidden roots giving strength to defy
The biting wind and the bleak winter cold.
The winter whispers of life at its core,
Of a stark beauty with nothing to hide.
The winter whispers of life that is more
Than all that’s born and beyond all that’s died.

Thank you for this beautiful song. I lost my electricity for two days, lost water and heat, and yet I had a wood stove to keep me warm. Even in the midst of it all, and still another ice storm to come today, I am aware of the Presence of Jesus and His loving embrace with me always. Even in the midst of winter we have love’s warmth and light within. Thank you again for this and all that you do to bring God’s love and light as you, into the world! You are a blessing!

Thanks so much, dear Patricia..indeed, indeed..one of the things I love most about winter is being able to see the real shapes and structures of the trees all around me. You really capture it, even in this incomprehensible winter out here in the midwest, with so little snow!

Loved it! Thanks for sharing Patricia! This came as we are having a very cold front here in Mexico….

A very lovely and haunting song, Patricia, and especially timely for us at Unity of Albany, as we are preparing a service for Jan. 28th on the theme, “Listening to the Wisdom of Winter”. Your song will quite likely find a place in the service!
Love from your friends in Albany!

Thank you for this lovely evocative image, Patricia. I have always been struck by trees in wintertime, the dark laciness of the leafless branches against the sky.… The delicacy of that and at the same time the strength that allows the beauty to show forth. What a blessing we are given!
